The Guardian/Ownership, value and beliefs

Use and gratifications for news:
-active/passive audience
-consume instead of watch/read etc

Audiences may consume newspapers at it provides social interaction which may be an active audiences way of talking to others, socialising and starting up conversations about what is going on in the world, For example the talk of Brexit which everyone can talk about. Another reason why an audience may consume newspapers is as it provides entertainment. Some audiences would read newspapers for the benefit of keeping up to date with the gossip and news.

-newspapers are not owned by a conglomerate. instead they are owned by people who are already wealthy and who's aim is to gain social and political influence.

-owners are not expected to interfere obviously with t he newspaper. doing this could destroy the newspapers credibility.

-editors who are interviewed frequently in the media always deny their owner interferes with the content. However, obviously the owner appoints the editor and they have similar views to that of the owner.

The Scott Trust owns the Guardian, it exists to:
-ensure the editorial independence of Newspapers
-appoint their editors
-ensure the newspapers continue their liberal traditions and do not affiliate to any political party
-promote the cause of freedom of the press = anyone must be free to set up a newspaper and newspapers must not be censored or controlled by the government, this allows for the democratic freedom of speech and expression.

values and beliefs:
-the liberal values as they are owned by the Scott trust whose job it is to ensure that newspapers are independent and liberal
-the target audience are middle class 'progressives' who read this newspaper for its liberal viewpoint
-they celebrate and cover stories of different genders, races, ethnicities and sexualities again showing they are liberal
-liberal values: tolerance, fairness and progress through media language, which makes it mainstream
-collaborate with reader and others to have greater impact
-report fairly on people as well as power and find things out

-believes in the rights of each individual
-that all individuals are of equal worth (democracy)
-all people of the world are of equal worth

representations should:
-promote democracy (equality) and the human rights
-celebrate individuality, diversity tolerance and allowing opposing points of views
-care for people no matters what in the world they live in (internationalism)
-be open minded about change

The Guardian newspaper reflects the Scott trusts values and beliefs as there are different genders, ethnicities and races on the front cover as well as in all the different stories, which shows that all individuals are of equal worths. They further reflect the Scott trust values as they show the left and right wing views and remain liberal.

How is the Guardian/Observer funded? 

- People can pay monthly, weekly or annually to support them. They don't have a paywall as they want everybody to access their stories, regardless of their income. This further shows supports their idea of equality and liberal views. Therefore their way of being funded is though the readers and subscriptions. A physical guardian newspaper costs 1.60 for subscribers, and 3.20 for the paper, if u are not a subscriber

How has the newspaper responded to decline newspaper sales?

- they have online social medias such as a website, apps, Instagram, Facebook, snapchat, twitter etc, which allows a wider audience to access it as technology is widely used by the younger generation. Convergence means the readers can access their app, website or social media simply just on they phone.

What might be the effects of the ownership on the paper's content?

- It is owned by the Scott Trust which means they are very diverse and include stories of different genders and ethnicities. This newspapers reflects the liberal views.
